Photographing Kids on the Wedding Day

Photographing kids..

It doesn’t take a wedding photographer to tell you that kids have their own agendas. Especially when it comes to group formals and portraits on the wedding day. Some times I photograph kids and they are completely on board with standing and having their photo taken. Other times, they throw tantrums, look the other way, run away, or need to sleep/eat/play.

Here’s a tip for brides and folks who have kids in the wedding party. Don’t worry about it.

As a parent and a photographer, I know firsthand that kids will have their picture taken when they are ready. They aren’t programmed to just hang out in wedding attire and cooperate (hell, sometimes the wedding party and families aren’t either!) Some of the absolute best photos of kids come naturally. When they are playing, talking to adults, and just being themselves.

Lots of times, the adults get distracted trying to be helpful with getting the kids to cooperate. They are talking, looking the other way, or missing in action. I always tell the adults to look at me, and not to worry about the kids. I know it might be hard to hear, but it’s the best advice you can get when it comes to kids and formal photos. Instead, focus on some of the cuteness that does come naturally when the kids are in photo-ready mode.

We were the first in our families to get married so there weren’t many kids at all. So we didn’t have any in our wedding party. It would have been cute to have some adorable photos of kids being kids. Now that I have my own, I can’t imagine them in a wedding. They’d be like a pair of tornados in a confetti shop for sure.

  8. Excellent Recommendations.
